Recycling of Computers, Monitors & Other Electronics
Although there are tens of millions of computers out there, the useful life is normally less than 3 years and shrinking, and advances in architecture and operating speeds and software development are rapidly rendering formerly “cutting-edge” electronics obsolete. So where do we stockpile this graveyard for dead technology? The answer is that in most cases PCs and other electronics are merely chopped up, crushed and sent to a dump.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has warned that end-of-life electronics pose serious issues regarding proper disposal and potential environmental consequences. The monitors’ cathode ray tube (CRT) contains trace amounts of lead, phosphorous, cadmium and mercury. The glass screen also contains lead-bearing particles. |
