EPA Creates E-Waste Recycling Guidelines

SustainableBusiness.com

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has released a new guide for electronics recycling operators.
"Responsible Recycling (R2) Practices for Use in Accredited Certification Programs for Electronics Recyclers" promotes better environmental, worker safety, and public health practices for electronics recyclers.

"There should be no doubt that choosing to reuse or recycle used electronics is the right choice for our environment," said Susan Parker Bodine, assistant administrator for EPA's Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response. "These voluntary guidelines will help assure Americans that their used electronics will be recycled safely and responsibly."

The R2 guide lists 13 principles to help electronics recyclers ensure their material is handled safely and legally in the U.S. and foreign countries. It calls on recyclers to establish a management system for environmental and worker safety; develop a policy that promotes reuse and material recovery over landfill or incineration; and use practices that reduce exposures or emissions during recycling operations. The principles also call for recyclers to use diligence to assure appropriate management of materials throughout the recycling chain, including materials that are exported to foreign countries.

NLR to Offer Free Recycling
NLR Inc., Connecticut’s first and only DEP permitted lamp and electronics recycler, will be offering free used compact fluorescent bulb, battery, and electronic recycling at the 29th Annual Hartford Fall Home Show at the Connecticut Expo Center on October 31, 2008-Nov. 2, 2008 presented by Jenks Productions.

Used CFLs, batteries and electronics are known as universal wastes and contain many hazardous materials. Materials such as mercury, lead, and heavy metals can contaminate ground soil and food supplies if not properly recycled. For over 14 years NLR has been dedicated to providing fully permitted services for the recycling of these materials for businesses and consumers.

NLR will have their ComPak and BatteryPak self-service recycling centers throughout the show floor for attendees to deposit their used items in all weekend. On Saturday Nov. 1, 2008 from 10 am – 4 pm NLR will be accepting used electronics from attendees and the general public in the Connecticut Expo Center parking lot. Some acceptable items include: computers, laptops, CRT monitors, printers, cell phones, fax machines, scanners, and home electronics.

According to a NLR representative, "NLR is extremely happy to partner with the Home Show and Jenks Productions to offer all attendees access to free CFL, battery and electronics recycling. Often consumers do not know where to go to get these items recycled and just end up throwing them in the trash. The Home Show is the perfect venue for them to do the right thing and properly recycle the material.”
